With Trump announcement, America becomes a climate change pariah

The U.S. might have walked away from the Paris Agreement, but that doesn't mean all its cities and states will do the same.

The Paris accord, signed by almost 200 countries in 2015, was meant to limit global warming to 2 degrees or less by 2100, mainly through country pledges to cut carbon dioxide and other emissions from the burning of fossil fuels.

The Paris agreement commits the USA and 187 other countries to keeping temperatures below 2C (3.6F) above pre-industrial times and "endeavour to limit" them even more, to 1.5C. That would be a huge change.

China is the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, but also the world's largest investor in renewable energies.

During a press conference in the White House Rose Garden Thursday, Trump cited research that suggested the emissions cuts agreed to under the deal would not reduce global temperatures fast enough to have a significant impact. By contrast, the analysis finds, China and India's efforts to shift from coal to renewable energy are gaining momentum, and could reduce projected emissions by 2-3 gigatonnes of Carbon dioxide by 2030.
