Rifle-wielding gunman wounds lawmaker, then killed by police

Two members of Congress suggested on Wednesday that they and their staff members should carry guns in the wake of the shooting attack that wounded Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and others.

The gunman, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Ill., fought a gun battle with police before he, too, was shot and later died.

Asked about the Federal Bureau of Investigation statement at a press conference Wednesday, Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), who was present at the shooting, appeared to identify the second congressman as Roger Williams (R-TX), whose staffer was among those shot.

Their practice game was being held at the YMCA baseball fields, near Alexandria's Eugene Simpson Stadium Park.

Wednesday's chaos drew about 100 police officers from different departments within minutes, according to witnesses, and helicopters swooped in to airlift the injured from the baseball field in suburban Alexandria, Va., outside Washington. The others injured were police and congressional staff. Colleagues tended to Scalise, who was shot in the hip and left a trail of blood as he dragged himself into the outfield.

Brooks said he took off his belt and he and another person used it as a tourniquet.

"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault", he said.

Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama said in a separate interview with CNN that at a certain point, the shooter came around the third base dugout towards home plate.

The group had alleged that the residents of Grenfell Tower did not receive any proper fire safety instructions from the KCTMO. He described a perilous situation: "Only one fire escape to get down, and apparently that caught on fire", he said.

The Associated Press reported that Hodgkinson had a string of legal troubles starting in the 1990s, with arrests for resisting police and drunken driving. It is time for Democrats like Reps.

Who was present, and who was shot?

Nancy Pelosi, a fierce rival of the GOP, expressed her sympathies toward Scalise and the four other victims. A hospital spokeswoman said Scalise, 51, remained in critical condition following his first surgery. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who was taking a final run when he heard the first shot. But with 535 members of the House and Senate, lawmakers said it is unlikely rank-and-file members will get security details unless there is a specific threat. They shot the shooter.

One player still wearing a batting helmet can be seen running in front of the camera as police return fire on the gunman. Republicans also control both chambers of Congress.

Barth was in good condition, according to a statement by Williams' office.

"It is sobering because it reminds us how quickly these senseless attacks can destroy lives, said Graves". Bernie Sanders. Sanders confirmed that Hodgkinson was apparently a volunteer in his 2016 presidential campaign.

He owns a home inspection business, according to the Washington Post, although his business licence expired previous year. In 2006, he was charged with battery and aiding damage to a motor vehicle. No motive has been given for the attack.

Republican members of Congress described feelings of fear and running for cover in the wake of a gunman opening fire on them during their practice for the Congressional Baseball Game.
