Trump decries shooting of top Congressman, calls for unity

The gunman responsible for the GOP congressional baseball practice shooting has died, President Donald Trump said Wednesday.

He opened fire early Wednesday morning on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia.

The gunman was identified as James T Hodgkinson from IL. The force was expanded and formalized in 1828 after a series of incidents, including an assault on the son of President John Quincy Adams in the Capitol Rotunda.

Investigators said they found anti-Trump messages on the shooter's Facebook social media page.

Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said during a news conference Wednesday that the officers wounded are in good condition and had injuries not considered life-threatening.

The congressional baseball game between Republicans and Democrats scheduled for Thursday is "the last bipartisan thing that is celebrated here" in Washington, Fortenberry said. He said the FBI has joined the investigation.

Matt Mika - a lobbyist for Tyson Foods - was also among the injured.

The gunman, who was armed with a rifle, was shot before being taken into custody, lawmakers who saw the shooting told reporters. Brooks added that he used his belt as a tourniquet to help one of the victims. The female officer was one of the wounded, he said, and the male officer was returning fire.

Duncan, of SC, says he gave a description of the man to Alexandria police that "fits the picture that's being shown on TV".

"We had no defence at all".
