The claim of al-Baghdadi's possible death comes almost three years to the day after he declared himself the leader of an Islamic caliphate in Iraq and Syria, from a historic mosque in Mosul. The Russian Defense Ministry said the information about his death was still "being verified through various channels".

The air strike, targeted a meeting of IS leaders and was carried out on May 28, the agencies cited the ministry as saying.

The leaders of the terrorist organization had gathered at the command center, in a southern suburb of Raqqa, to discuss possible routes for the militants' retreat from the city, the statement said.

The Islamic State leader has a £20million bounty on his head because his hate-filled sermons inspired suicide attacks across Europe.

Recent evidence unearthed for a documentary shows Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi escaped capture in Iraq by just minutes back in 2013, before unleashing his army of jihadis on the world.

But several sources and experts ruled out Moscow's claims and said that Baghdadi was not in Raqqa when the Russian airstrike occured.

The Russian defence ministry said on its Facebook page that it was checking information that Baghdadi was killed in the strike, launched after Russia received intelligence about a meeting of Islamic State leaders.

Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi may have been killed in an air strike by Russian forces in on the outskirts of Raqqa in Syria, last month, unconfirmed reports from Moscow said.

Other state media reported that more than 300 "terrorists" were killed in the strike.

"U.S. private sector engagement can be a positive force for the kind of change we all wish to see in Cuba", said Myron Brilliant, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce executive vice president and head of worldwide affairs.

Who is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi?

It said the raid had targeted a meeting of the IS military council in the group's de facto capital of Raqqa, in northern Syria.

He did not swear allegiance to the leader of the al-Qaeda franchise, Ayman al-Zawahiri, who had urged IS to focus on Iraq and leave Syria to al-Nusra.

Still, the death of al-Baghdadi would be a major military and propaganda success for Russian Federation, which has waged a military campaign in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad since September 2015.

The group's current No. 2 is believed to be Ayad Abdul-Rahman al-Obeidi, also known as Abu Saleh Haifa, a former Iraqi army officer under Saddam Hussein.

So far, there has been minimal reaction from online supporters of IS to news of the reported death of the group's leader, it said.

Cuba's 1470-word statement Friday night labeled Trump a hypocrite for calling on Cuba to improve human rights, saying the US government "is threatening more limits on healthcare that would leave 23 million people without insurance. and marginalizes immigrants and refugees, particular those from Islamic countries".

Senior White House officials who briefed reporters Thursday on the coming announcement said Obama's overtures had enriched Cuba's military while repression increased on the island.
