The Janta Dal (United) on Wednesday said they will support the National Democratic Alliance's presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind, NDTV reported.

On June 19, the BJP Parliamentary Board, the party's highest decision-making body, proposed the name of current Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as the NDA candidate for next Presidential elections due in July.

"We have chose to extend support to NDA's presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind as his tenure as Governor had been peaceful", he said.

When the MLAs left Raipur for New Delhi, at that time the BJP had not declared its President candidate. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray made this announcement after meeting senior party leaders in Mumbai this evening.

The decision to support Ram Nath Kovind as President of India was taken by Shiv Sena today after a 90 minute meeting. And while the government's job seems to be getting easier with its otherwise hard ally the Shiv Sena too now coming on board with its choice of Presidential nominee, the TRS having already committed its support and the AIADMK too leaning towards supporting the NDA candidate.

Asked if there was a division among the opposition parties, particularly after Mayawati said BSP was "positive" about Kovind's nomination, the sources said, the unity is not hurt. The decision was taken after a party meeting regarding the upcoming presidential elections.

Nominations will close on June 28 and an electoral college consisting of elected members of India's federal parliament and state legislatures will decide the victor on July 17.
