It takes a village to work and live near Facebook: Housing, retail part of plans for California campus

Facebook in 2015 completed a massive expansion of its Menlo Park headquarters.

She said, though, that Facebook's plan fits with the city's own long-term plan for development, and that the city was excited about the additional housing.

Impetus for the "Willow Campus" includes inadequate housing and public transit, making it tough for Facebook workers to live and commute where the leading social network has its headquarters, according to vice president of global facilities and real estate John Tenanes.

In addition to 1.75 million square feet of office space, there will be 1.6 million square feet of residential space and 125,000 square feet of retail and mixed-use space.

The description of the new office, dubbed "Willow Campus", sounds like a almost complete town: It'll have apartments, local transportation, multiple parks, office space, a grocery store, and a pharmacy. "Our hope is to create a physical space that supports our community and builds on our existing programs".

This will include a new retail area, a grocery store, housing, hotels, and transport.

Implicit in the tech company's announcement is Facebook's belief that it can solve some of the area's most pressing issues, including traffic congestion, demand for affordable housing and a lack of transit options.

"Going forward, we plan to continue to work closely with local leaders and community members to ensure Facebook's presence is a benefit to the community", Tenanes wrote. The company did not reveal how much the new project will cost.

Alphabet has taken a smaller step, buying 300 modular apartment units for short-term employee housing, the Wall Street Journal reported last month.

Facebook foresees a couple years of review process for the plans and construction following in phases. It will comprise a total of 1,500 homes, with 15 per cent to be offered at below market rates. City officials have not yet commented on the company's plans.
