The Lion King cast includes Donald Glover (Community, Atlanta) as the young lion Simba and James Earl Jones (Star Wars) as Mufasa.

Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner and John Oliver are also already on board, while Beyonce has been widely rumoured to be playing Nala. Academy award nominee #Chiwetel Ejiofor is reportedly being eyed to play the villainous uncle that drove Simba with guilt following the death of Mufasa.

In recent months, there was speculation that Jeremy Irons, who voiced the villain in the 1994 animated classic, would be reprising the role, followed by rumors that Hugh Jackman was in talks, but a representative for the latter told the trade that there was "absolutely no truth" behind those claims.

He is, however, not the first person to be linked to this role. The director used the same technique when he directed the live-action version of "The Jungle Book", which Disney released in October 2016.

That film also had an impressive cast, with Lupita Nyong'o as Raksha, Idris Elba as Shere Khan, Christopher Walken as King Louie, Ben Kingsley as Bagheera and Bill Murray as Baloo. The film became the highest grossing animated movie of all time.

The Lion King won't feature any humans - unless its plot deviates wildly from the original - meaning it will be an entirely computer-generated film, only one with the same near-photo-real imagery.

Remakes of Mulan, Dumbo and Aladdin, as well as a sequel to Mary Poppins, are now in the works.

Disney has scheduled "The Lion King" live-action for a July 2019 run in theaters.
