This year the former President is playing it low-key and enjoying his annual family vacation at Martha's Vineyard for his 56th birthday. "I can't get any more specific than that".

Check out Steph's IG shot, which shows his arm around President Obama on the golf course, and includes Curry's wife, Ayesha Curry, their daughters and his parents, Dell and Sonya. Still, it's been harder to confirm than in years past that President Obama, Michelle, Malia, and Sasha were coming back to the Vineyard, where they spent seven out of eight summer vacations while in the White House.

But, instead of sending a generic "sorry we can't make it" card - or, indeed, ignoring Liz's invitation entirely - they penned a special little note that will serve as a life-long keepsake for her big day.

The reply arrived in a fancy envelope which was stamped "The Office of Barack and Michelle Obama".

The former FLOTUS kicked off the festivities by sharing a throwback photo of the pair and the kids blowing out the birthday cake candles on his 43rd birthday.

"I'm happy to have him come, but this place is filled with so much frenetic energy at this time - it's a particularly bad year for frenetic energy - I just wish he could come in October", said resident Kim Rome.
