Asked about gun laws, the president said "we'll be talking about gun laws as time goes by".

The Sportsman's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act (SHARE Act) was introduced last month, which would allow gun owners to transport registered firearms across state lines, carry guns in national parks and eliminate the $200 transfer tax on silencers, local media reports said.

He shot and killed 59 people and injured more than 500 on Monday, the deadliest shooting in modern USA history.

Along with handguns Paddock also had several assault rifles, many of which had a modification known as a "Bump Stock" which allows for the weapon to fire more rounds per second.

The madman - who slaughtered 59 people Sunday when he opened fire on a music festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel - was a longtime customer of the Mesquite store, Sullivan said.

Presidential spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that "we're certainly open to having that conversation".

Semi-automatic rifles, which can be legally purchased in America, allow only one shot to be fired with each pressing of the trigger.

But she cautioned against moving toward any single gun control measure before the investigation into the Nevada incident is complete.

President Trump dines with military leaders, calls it 'calm before the storm'
Trump said he expects the leaders to provide him with a "broad range of military options, when needed, at a much faster pace".

But a device that makes a semi-automatic function like an illegal automatic weapon may be something that Republicans, too, want to outlaw.

The NRA stopped short of calling for legislation on so-called "bump-fire stock" or "bump stock" devices.

The device, known as a "bump stock", replaces the shoulder rest of a rifle with a device that bounces the weapon back into the shooter's trigger finger.

The comments from lawmakers including No. 2 Senate Republican John Cornyn of Texas mark a surprising departure from the GOP's general antipathy to gun regulations of any kind.

"With that, there have been subsequent tougher rules and ethics complaints, and so the speaker has made clear that he will be enforcing all of those rules", Sanchez said.

What is a bump stock?

According to Coley, the stock of the gun and the grip are one piece on a bump stock.
