Ivana Clifford, 26, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly killing her roommate's ferret by putting it in an oven at their apartment in Manchester, New Hampshire, news station WHDH reported.

Manchester police arrived at the apartment about 2:40 a.m. Wednesday after firefighters removed a "burnt item" from the apartment.

Firefighters cleared the building and found the ferret.

"They (Clifford and her husband) were staying with another person that lived in our building, and he kicked them out so we felt bad for them and we took them in", Murray said.

Officers spoke to Ivana Clifford, 26, and charged her with one count of animal cruelty.

During court appearance, Judge Gillian Abramson told Clifford, 'These allegations display a profound sense of sadism.

Historians said that over 200,000 women, mostly Koreans, fell victim to Japan's wartime crime against humanity. The woman, Lee Yong Soo, was enslaved by the Japanese Army during World War II when she was just 16-years-old.

She said the loss of her 2-year-old ferret has been 'devastating'.

She added: "To lose a ferret, it's like losing a kid or family". "I just can't believe she did that".

Clifford's heartbroken roommate, Kara Murray, told investigators she and her boyfriend awoke to the sound of a smoke alarm and saw Clifford quickly leaving their unit. Murray tearfully told NBC 12 News.

Clifford now remains held in custody on $10,000 bail.

Murray told NH1 that she thinks Clifford killed the ferret because it had nipped her earlier in the day, though Murray said the bite didn't draw blood. If Clifford posts bail, she is not allowed to return to Murray's apartment, reports CBS Boston.
