U.S. counsel Robert Mueller has initiated investigation into the alleged plot of former general Mike Flynn and his son to abduct Pennsylvania-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen in exchange for millions of dollars, RawStory reported.

In March, former CIA Director James Woolsey told the WSJ that he attended a meeting in a hotel room in New York City last December where Flynn discussed "a covert step in the dead of night to whisk this guy away".

It's still rather early in the morning, but I feel comfortable saying that the latest reporting on Michael Flynn, Donald Trump's former White House National Security Advisor, is going to be the craziest story of the day.

The plan was to remove Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, an avowed enemy of Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, from the USA and return him to Turkey. Mr Gulen has always denied any role in the coup that was carried out by rogue senior members of the Turkish Armed Forces that styled themselves as the Peace at Home Council.

A spokesperson for the Trump transition process told the Wall Street Journal that the team had no evidence that the meeting took place.

The figures reportedly suggest that manufacturing may help to counteract a consumer-led slowdown in the economy . Separate data showed the UK's trade deficit in goods and services narrowed by more than expected in September.

Flynn was a senior adviser on national security matters to the Trump campaign at the time, though he was also on a foreign government's payroll.

Flynn lobbied on behalf of Turkish interests in the US before joining the Trump administration but didn't disclose the work until March, after he was forced out of the White House for misleading statements about conversations he had with the Russian ambassador about sanctions. The discussions allegedly involved the possibility of transporting Mr. Gulen on a private jet to the Turkish prison island of Imrali, according to one of the people who has spoken to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Flynn penned an op-ed last November suggesting the USA should expel Gulen.

Investigators for Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russia's interference with the US presidential election recently questioned witnesses about the alleged December 2016 meeting between Flynn and senior Turkish officials, two people knowledgeable with the interviews said.
