Evra was today banned from European club football for the rest of the season and fined €10,000 (£9,000) after his red card for kicking a supporter.

The former Manchester United left-back can still be signed by another team before the end of his ban, but the player is unable to feature in any fixtures in the Champions League or Europa League.

Marseille said they and the 36-year-old had both agreed that the former Manchester United and French global would leave by "mutual consent".

The 36-year-old was one of Marseille's substitutes for the match at Vitoria Guimaraes, but appeared to get into an altercation with some of his own team's fans as he walked along the touchline with team-mates prior to kick off.

"First of all for Patrice Evra, who has obviously understood all the consequences of his act and that he can no longer fulfill his passion (of playing) for Marseille", club president Jacques-Henri Eyraud said.

And they have since confirmed that the player's contract has been terminated by mutual consent.

The former France captain is also now suspended by his club, although is expected to shortly return to the fray in domestic competition.

Marseille, which has opened its own internal investigation into the incident, said in a statement shortly after UEFA's announcement that it has ended Evra's contract with "immediate effect".

"This incident also highlighted the unacceptable attitude of a small number of people who uttered insults and threats of violence towards the player and his family before contemptuously invading the pitch".
