Andhra Pradesh: 14 killed as boat capsizes in Krishna river, rescue operations underway

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and Krishna district authorities have launched a massive search and rescue operation to trace the missing people.

Local fishermen swung into action and rescued 15 passengers, the Press Trust of India reported.

Vijayawada: The dead bodies of the tourists were killed after their boat capsized in Krishna river near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh on Nov 12, 2017.

They said that the boat, run by Simple Water Sports, was ferrying 35-40 passengers, much more than its capacity of 20.

Survivors said they boarded the private boat as the boats of the Tourism Department were not available.

The boat, owned by a private agency, overturned as it approached the ferry point around 5.45pm. Bad light is believed to have hampered rescue operations.

National Disaster Response Force personnel are now performing rescue operation.

While six picnickers died after falling into the Ganga river in Vaishali, three women drowned in the Baghmati River when a boat capsized in Samastipur district, the officials had said.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister N China Rajappa, leader of opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and others expressed grief over the tragedy.
