In 2009, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson tried to strengthen United's attacking line by signing the promising French talent, Benzema, but the player chose to join Madrid, so Ferguson made a decision to sign Owen from Newcastle United.
Owen signed for Manchester United in 2009 on a free after his contract with Newcastle United ended.
It left Fergie scratching around for alternatives so he put in a call to Owen.
The 81-time capped worldwide generally ignores such insults and gets on with his work, but, speaking in an interview with Canal Plus France today, Benzema revealed that one instance of criticism aimed in his direction during his early years at the Bernabeu left him with no choice but to speak up.
Owen was signed by Ferguson on a free transfer.
GQ: Colin Kaepernick is 'citizen of the year'
Colin Kaepernick appears on the cover of an upcoming issue of GQ after the magazine named him one of its 2017 Men of the Year. The cover of the magazine released on Monday shows the former 49ers quarterback with a big Afro and a black leather jacket.
In it, he demanded to be shown more respect after Mourinho criticised the threat he posed in attack by suggesting it was like going hunting with a cat.
Benzema said it had been the cue for what had been "a good relationship" to begin showing strain.
HOW well do you know the Manchester United stars and their WAGs?
'It felt that he thought they were amusing and the truth is that if he was someone that I respected, then in that moment I lost my cool'. We had a meeting for an hour. "The most hard thing in Madrid is the pressure but with age, I have learned to stay calm".
Mourinho told reporters: "If I can't hunt with a dog, I will hunt with a cat". I'm shy but if you make fun of me, I'll be straight. "And when you speak your mind, it's true that things are always better".
