South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the soldier was shot by North Korean troops as he fled across the Military Demarcation Line from the northern side of Panmunjeom at 3:31 p.m. Monday.

Meanwhile, North Korea's foreign ministry spokesperson, on Saturday, said in Pyongyang that Trump's current trip to "our surrounding region" is a warmonger's visit for confrontation to rid the DPRK of its self defensive nuclear deterrence.

Xi told Moon that he encouraged South Korea to resume dialogue with North Korea and re-engage with them for reconciliation and de-nuclearisation, state news agency Xinhua reported. In September the North carried out its sixth and largest nuclear test, of what it described as a hydrogen bomb.

He leaves for the Philippines on Sunday afternoon where he will attend the ASEAN summit of Southeast Asian leaders.

During Saturday's summit, Moon and Xi also agreed to quickly normalise bilateral exchanges in all sectors, Yoon added, repeating what was said in the agreement announced last month when the two countries agreed to end a year-long standoff over the deployment of a USA anti-missile system. The Aegis technology refers to missile defense system.

The defector was taken to hospital after being shot by another North Korean soldier, the South's military said.

That includes a stern speech delivered in South Korea's National Assembly on Tuesday, in which he said: 'Do not underestimate us.

According to US Navy's 7 Fleet, this is the first time since the joint naval exercise held in 2007 near Guam.

The United States has been sending its strategic assets, also including long-range bombers, to the region more frequently for patrols or drills amid accelerating North Korean efforts to expand its nuclear weapons program.

Tensions have been running high since North Korea test-fired two intercontinental ballistic missiles in July, conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3 and flew ballistic missiles over Japan on August 29 and September 15.
