Five days after Oregon State had reportedly found its next head coach, new reports have surfaced, saying the Beavers have chosen a different coach.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because an official announcement was being finalized.
The 38-year-old Smith has been at Washington since 2014, where he's been the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was the quarterback of the 2000 team that went 11-1 - losing only at Washington 33-30 - and routed Notre Dame 41-9 in the 2001 Fiesta Bowl. Cory Hall served as the interim coach this year after Gary Andersen was sacked in October.
Last week, a report from FootballScoop.com said former Eastern Washington head coach Beau Baldwin would be head coach of Oregon State.
Smith has been part of a Washington staff that has led the Huskies to consecutive double-digit win seasons. The Beavers wrapped up the season with a 69-10 loss to OR in the Civil War to finish 1-11 overall, 0-9 in conference.
