The software update also brings nearly 30 free apps and more than 80 watch faces to the App Gallery from smaller developers, which will finally give Ionic owners something to do on their wrists.

The Fitbit Ionic is Fitbit's first true smartwatch, and although not flawless, it's a great step in the right direction for the company. But the impression was that Ionic is more of a fitness watch than a smartwatch. On the apps side of things, some of the big names include Walgreens, Nest, Philips Hue, Yelp, Flipboard, The New York Times, TripAdvisor, Uber, United Airlines, British Airways, and Lyft. It suffered from a serious lack of apps amongst other things.

Fitbit created a couple of goodies as well, including a Leaderboard app that will let you see how your step totals compare to family and friends.

Fitbit has also designed three new watchfaces for the Ionic that are bundled with the new update: levels, threads, and mountainscape. Users will benefit from some performance enhancements, too, and Fitbit Pay is getting a wider selection of banks and multi-card payment.

The new Fitbit Labs Pet app. This is where the company will explore ideas and test potential new features. The program launches today with two apps: a Fitbit Pet watchface that's a little like a Tamagotchi, and an app called Think Fast that looks to test mental sharpness. Perhaps most significantly, the Fitbit Ionic promises four days of battery life on a single charge. While these might not be the most exciting apps for many smartwatch users, there are more apps coming down the pipeline soon (which is to say, by the end of the year).

The Fitbit OS update announced today, December 5, adds 14 new apps to the new Fitbit App Store, although some aren't quite ready for public release. While this update won't necessarily fix the problem, it will help to improve the situation. There were no apps outside the pre-installed ones available at launch, so this update will finally open the door to more developers.
