England has been handed an even more prominent role in hosting the 2020 European Championship after a further four matches were allocated to Wembley Stadium.

In addition to the host-city pairs, UEFA also announced that the opening match of the tournament will be played at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.

UEFA chose to reallocate the three group-stage games and one last-16 game originally given to the Belgian capital because of delays in the project to build a new 60,000-capacity Eurostadium on the site of Heysel.

In Nyon, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said the decision of UEFA's executive committee had been unanimous.

The 2020 tournament is being played in 12 cities across Europe, instead of one or two host nations, as a one-off to celebrate the tournament's 60th anniversary.

"We discussed with Brussels for quite a long time, they were not able to provide us with all the documentation".

The building of a new Brussels stadium for the tournament had run into delays involving the applications for construction and environmental permits.

In a statement, FA chief executive Martin Glenn said: "We are delighted to help UEFA by hosting the additional four matches at Wembley Stadium".

"They still don't have the documents".

Los Angeles fire chief: 'Our people are getting tired'
Around 2,500 homes were forced to evacuate but the highway remained open even as other roads were closed, officials said. The Los Angeles Fire Department has deployed hundreds of firefighters and called in helicopters and airplanes.

"Experts from (our) administration felt it was a high risk for UEFA to wait".

Brussels has hoped to construct a new stadium ever since the Heysel stadium disaster, when 39 people died before the start of the 1985 European Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool.

While the decision has come as a blow to the Welsh, and Belgians, it is a major coup for the Football Association, London and Wembley Stadium, which hosted several games in the 1996 tournament.

But they will now also host three group games and a second-round match which had been due to take place in Brussels.

The other host cities for Euro 2020 are: Baku, Copenhagen, Munich, Budapest, Rome, Amsterdam, Bucharest and Bilbao.

Likewise world champions Germany would be paired with Hungary.

The draw will take place on January 24.

A conflict between the first two broke out in 2014 that resulted in Russian Federation annexing Crimea from Ukraine, while the second two fought a war in the early 1990s that never resulted in a peace treaty.
