Trent Franks is expected to resign from Congress, a source with knowledge told Roll Call.

According to Arizona state law, the governor will have to call a special election to fill the seat as Franks' resignation would come more than 6 months before the next general election.

"If this turns out to be true, there won't be that many people who are surprised", the Arizona Republican said, according to the report.

Asked for comment as he left the floor, Franks said, "I'll let the statement speak for itself".

Three years later, Franks pushed bills that would limit access to abortion, even in cases of rape or incest, saying "the incidents of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low".

Franks was seen huddling with fellow Republicans on the floor of the House Thursday, in what appeared to be a prayer circle.

Franks is a congressman from Arizona's 8th district.

Before winning election to Congress, he served in the Arizona legislature and founded the Arizona Family Research Institute, an organization associated with Dr. James Dobson's "Focus on the Family".
