The Douglas County Coroner's office identified the suspect as Matthew Riehl, 37, and said the investigation is ongoing.

The four surviving officers were all "stable", said Spurlock.

The shooter is not believed to have a criminal history, but was known to local police officers as being mentally unstable.

The wounded deputies tried to pull the fallen officer, identified as Zackari Parrish, out of the line of further gunfire but were unable to due to their own injuries and only managed to "crawl to safety", Spurlock said. "He knew we were coming, and we obviously let him know we were there to investigate the disturbance".

The roommate of the Riehl is cooperating with law enforcement.

Two civilians were wounded during the barrage of gunfire, too.

The incident occurred around 5:15 a.m.at Copper Canyon Apartments, a landscaped apartment complex in Highland Ranch, 16 miles south of Denver.

Describing his meeting with the deputy's widow, the sheriff said, "When I held her hand and looked in her eyes, I could see her life was over".

Parrish, the slain officer, was 29 and a married father of two young children.

These measures include reducing the price of an out-of-warranty battery replacement, taking it from $79 to $29 for all of 2018. The company says that the aim wasn't planned obsolescence, but instead making the iPhones "last as long as possible".

"The suspect was just making a ton of noise and annoying everyone around him", Spurlock said.

At the time of Parrish's shooting death, the Colarado deputy had only worked for the department for about seven months, transferring from another agency. They were identified as Mike Doyle, 28; Taylor Davis, 30; Jeffrey Pelle, 32; and Tom O'Donnell, 31.

The scene was videotaped and posted on the Douglas County sheriff's Facebook page under the heading: "Motorcade for our fallen deputy".

Zackari Parrish was the 45th U.S. police officer to be shot dead in the line of duty in 2017.

The sheriff added that it was the second call to address located at 3404 East County Line Road in Highland Park four hours earlier for a noise disturbance call, but he said when they arrived "there was no noise" and "they couldn't find any evidence there was any issue going on".

"It's never easy", Spurlock said.

"Any citizens in the affected area are instructed to shelter in place, avoid windows and stay away from exterior walls", the department said, calling it an "active event".

President Donald Trump expressed sorrow, writing on Twitter: "My deepest condolences to the victims of the bad shooting in Douglas County dcsheriff, and their families". The two civilians also suffered non-life threatening injuries, Spurlock said.
