The police got the first lead on the attackers from CCTV camera footage that captured one of them soon after the attack.
Former Shiv Sena corporator, Ashok Sawant, was stabbed to death outside his house in Mumbai's suburb Kandivali at around 11 pm, on Sunday night. He has served as a corporator for two-terms from Samata Nagar in Kandivli. Both Sawant and Sonawane fell to the ground and while the latter ran after the person who kicked their two-wheeler, a man got out of the autorickshaw and stabbed Sawant several times, police had said. "We can not reveal more at this moment", said Vinay Rathod, deputy commissioner of police (zone XII).
While the motive of the killings is still not clear, report in The Times of India said that Sawant, who had entered cable television business a few years ago, began receiving extortion calls days before he was killed.
A senior police officer told mid-day that the accused were identified after an autorickshaw driver came forward with some doubts.
