He said: "Unfortunately, the fire is spreading to the roof of the new section of Nottingham train station, and is now travelling along the concourse of the area across the main lines into Nottingham train station".

"Our current advice to customers is not to travel to or from Nottingham station this morning".

The fire broke out in the main concourse and spread to the roof.

This is disrupting our trains on the Nottingham/London St Pancras Matlock/Nottingham/Newark, Nottingham/Mansfield/Worksop, Leicester/Lincoln/Grimbsy, Nottingham/Grantham/Skegness and Liverpool/Nottingham/Norwich routes.

Mills said firefighters are using thermal imaging to make sure this fire is out because "crews can't physically see the orange flames we are trying to fight".

- All trains to and from Nottingham are cancelled until further notice.

Firefighters were working in "arduous conditions" and it would take a "considerable amount of time" for them to bring the fire under control, he added.

The fire caused widespread cancellations and delays.

"We expect the station to remain closed and East Midlands Trains services to and from Nottingham to be disrupted throughout the rest of today, Friday 12 January".

"The station has been evacuated and there have been no reports of any injuries to customers or staff".

"Station Street, Carrington Street and Queen's Road have been closed", Nottinghamshire Police tweeted.

The fire service tweeted: "The incident at #NottinghamTrainStation is now a large incident with eight appliances in attendance".

- Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at 6.25am.
