Incumbent telcos increase market share in November Reliance Jio’s active subscriber base improves

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited () has increased the validity of its unlimited call and data packs of Rs. 186, Rs. 187, Rs. 349, Rs. 429, Rs. 485, and Rs. 666 to please its prepaid subscribers.

Reliance Jio Infocomm added as many as 6.11 million customers in November, taking its market share past 13% while rivals Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular registered comparatively lower customer gains of 4.34 million, 2.7 million and 3.19 million respectively, according to data put out by the telecom regulator. Airtel's new Rs. 93 prepaid recharge pack is giving a tough competition to Reliance Jio Rs. 98 recharge pack. Priced at Rs. 198, Rs. 398, Rs. 448, and Rs. 498, the new Jio plans come with 28-day, 70-day, 84-day, and 91-day validities, respectively. And even if you happen to exhaust the entire data, you will be able to access internet at the speed of 64 kbps.

Airtel had newly launched a new prepaid pack of Rs. 199 that gives 1GB data daily for 28 days. Talking about the benefits of the Jio 4G 149 plan, the plan offers unlimited calls including all local, STD and roaming calls.

The earlier Rs. 149 pack, which offered 28-day validity and 150MB data per day, has been phased out as part of this exercise. Now, buyers will get 1GB data per day for 28 days at Rs. 149 (down from Rs. 199), and for 70 days at Rs. 349 (down from Rs. 399). Also, there are several other prepaid packs of Reliance Jio, Airtel, Idea, and Vodafone operators, which offer 2GB daily to users.

The number of telecom subscribers dwindled by 15.8 million to 1,185.88 million in November, even as Reliance Jio continued to lead in customer addition to reaching over 150 million subscribers, as per a report by TRAI. This brings up the bundled data from 84GB to 91GB for the total validity period. Similarly, its Rs. 509 pack now offers 91-day validity, up from the previous 84 days. With the latest development, the state-owned telecom giant is offering as a long validity as 129 days for unlimited voice calls, SMS, and up to 1.5GB of data. Reliance Jio 799 plan offers 140GB data for a period of 28 days.
