Legendary College Football Announcer Keith Jackson Dies At Age 89

"For generations of fans, Keith Jackson was college football", said Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company. His final game was in 2006, where he called the famous Rose Bowl game between USC and Texas.

His career went far beyond college football Saturdays, however, with Jackson in the booth for Olympic moments, play-by-play on Monday Night Football and more in a long career at ABC.

Jackson was considered by many to be "the voice" of college football, broadcasting the sport for 50-plus years. In the 80s, he was seemingly on the call for every big Notre Dame game and then in the 90s he was there for the 1993 Sugar Bowl between Miami and Alabama and then for the 1997 Sugar Bowl between Florida State and Florida. Jackson was synonymous with the Rose Bowl as well as his catch phrase, "Whoa Nellie". He also called NBA, MLB and college basketball games.

Keith Jackson has passed away. Can close my eyes and think of so many of his special calls.

Rest in peace, Keith, and thanks for all the great memories.

"'We, too, are saddened to hear of (Jackson's passing)", the University of MI tweeted on its official athletics feed.

Jackson was born on October 18, 1928, in Georgia and served in the Marines before attending Washington State University, where he started his broadcasting career in the early 1950s.

The National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association named him the National Sportscaster of the Year five times, among other honors. In the days before cable and monstrous television packages where almost every top-level college football game is televised, the ABC 3:30 p.m. ET game was appointment viewing for many college football fans as it was traditionally the weekend's marquee game.

Jackson will forever be remembered and dearly missed.
