Report: Manny Machado, Orioles Avoid Arbitration With $16 Million Deal

Although the 1 p.m. arbitration-filing deadline passed with no news, the Orioles took care of a lot of business Friday afternoon, agreeing to contracts with five of their seven arbitration-eligible players: Manny Machado, Zach Britton, Brad Brach and Caleb Joseph and Tim Beckham.

Britton, who is expected to miss the first half of the season after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon while doing sprints in December, agreed to a $12 million deal. The 25-year-old's 3.5 WAR was the lowest since the 2014 season, despite Machado playing in only 82 games that year due to needing knee surgery. Catcher Caleb Joseph received a raise from $700,000 to $1.25 million and shortstop Tim Beckham received a hefty salary from $885,000 a year ago (with the Tampa Bay Rays) to $3.35 million for 2018. Brach, 31, had a 3.18 ERA while picking up in 18 saves in place of Britton last season. Over his career in the majors, Machado has posted a WAR clip of 27.9 He has hit 138 homers with 406 RBIs over the course of 764 games.

Other arbitration-eligible Orioles players include second baseman Jonathan Schoop and right-hander Kevin Gausman.
