"I always thought this park was named Dr. Martin Luther King until one day someone told me, 'Meet me at Mellis Park.' I said, 'Where's Mellis?'" Jones said. Day a federal holiday but it wasn't until 2000 that all 50 states recognized it as a paid holiday for all state employees. It comes at a time when all believers in human rights continue the struggle to transform the vision and dream of Dr. King into a lived reality for everyone. Going forward, that commitment to service on the third Monday of January will better unite and strengthen each of us and the entire Cherokee Nation.
The parade is coordinated by the Zeta Sigma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the oldest African American fraternity in America, founded in 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; Dr. King was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. On that day, and every day, we should all be an advocate for people who face injustices in their lives.
Many people refused to support an integrated dinner to recognize Dr. King, until Coca-Cola CEO J. Paul Austin threatened to take his company out of Atlanta if the city's elite did not honor him.
