Bryant was paid $1.05 million previous year. Among that group is third baseman, who could threaten Ryan Howard's first-year arbitration record salary of $10 million.

Bryant, 26, is one of three players, along with Buster Posey and Howard to win both the Rookie of the Year and MVP before becoming arbitration eligible. He's in the first year of arbitration and has a career 2.94 ERA, 1.098 WHIP and finished third in the NL Cy Young voting in 2016. The biggest question heading into 2018 is whether Bryant will continue to bat primarily out of the two hole (411 at-bats last season).

The Cubs still have several other players to negotiate contracts with, and Friday marks the date where teams exchange salary numbers with arbitration-eligible players.

The Cubs settled with five of their six arb-eligible players as of Friday afternoon.

The team also also avoided arbitration with reliever Justin Wilson who they acquired from the Detroit Tigers back in July of 2017.
