Snowfall covers Tallahassee as Florida hit by winter storm

The last time snow was even seen in Tallahassee was almost three decades ago, as myPalmBeachPost says it last snowed in the state's capital in December 1989! Because of this "bomb cyclone", as it is known, forecasters have issued winter storm warnings from northern Florida to New England, a rare occurrence.

While the frigid temperatures were expected to persist for a few more days, there was no more precipitation in the forecast for that time, so people in Florida might have to wait another 30 years to see snow in their yards again.

Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport received 1.2 inches of snow, making it the seventh-heaviest one-day snowfall on record there.

For the moment, PIX11 News' Weather Center is calling for 4 to 8 inches of snow in the five boroughs and along the Jersey Shore, with 8 to 12 inches of accumulation on eastern Long Island, and about 1 to 4 inches of snow in western and northern New Jersey.

Snow fell in Tallahassee on Wednesday morning. A massive front is bringing some of the coldest temperatures in years to parts of Florida. As the storm moved north, parts of Georgia and the Carolinas could get some snow, as well.

In Orlando, Florida's largest theme parks announced that water attractions such as Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, Universal Orlando's Volcano Bay and SeaWorld's Aquatica were closed Wednesday because of the cold snap.

The temperature early Wednesday in Orlando was 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 Celsius) and it was raining.

Besides polar bears, Arctic foxes, elk and other cold-tolerant animals will be on display.

As much of the nation is gripped by cold weather, there are several places in the south east getting snow. It warned that icy roads and low visibility could make driving treacherous across the region.
