Dangerous Flu Virus Spreads Across 46 States

Flu hospitalizations in Pueblo spike

Kathy Harben, a spokeswoman for the agency, said the Tuesday session would now address guidance for health professionals on trying to reduce the spread of the flu and to help with shortages of antiviral medicines in some hard-hit areas.

"We need it and we could say we need it but that doesn't mean we will get it, we have had great difficulty getting it in the past five to 10 years".

Public health officials continued to press the public to get flu shots, saying it wasn't too late, and that the vaccine offered flawless protection against three of the four strains. "They've found through research that in the winter months there are congregations of people and that provides an excellent mode of transmission".

Some symptoms too look out for include a dry cough, body aches and a fever. In the first week of 2018 alone, 425 new cases were reported from 38 counties.

Williamson and Hays counties each have reported more than 700 flu cases but no flu deaths. But the number of flu-related hospitalizations, especially among those 65 and older, has been increasing steadily since flu season began in October, according to a January 4 report from the NMDOH.

There was a 50% increase in the number of people admitted to hospital with the flu this week compared to the week before. Anyone who has the flu should be fever-free for at least 24-hours before returning to work or school.

The flu season started early, which is never a good sign, and the flu is already widespread throughout the country, the latest report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows.

Because of the flu season which has come on earlier and more aggressive than years past Beaumont has chose to ban children under 13 from visiting all eight of their hospitals.

It's unclear, yet, if that type of severity will appear here, Jernigan said.

WVU Hits Road For Texas Tech
Here's the list: at No. 8 Texas Tech, at home versus No. 12 Kansas and Texas, at No. 16 TCU and at home against No. 21 Kentucky. West Virginia led virtually the whole game, and was up 18 early in the second half. "And in today's game that's all there is".

Merritt notes that influenza is spread by droplets, which can spread the virus even before any symptoms begin, and a person can be infectious for up to two weeks afterward.

It has been proven to help decrease stress, which can prevent you from catching a bug in the first place.

Regular hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes with the inside of one's elbow, and reducing stress also will protect and limit the effects of seasonal flu.

Alcohol based gels are the next best thing if you don't have access to soap and water. A majority of states are reporting high influenza-illness activity, more so than in previous years.

The H3N2 strain is more risky to patients over 65, under 2 and to those of any age deemed high-risk due to other health issues, such as chronic diseases. Some, he said, are saying "no visitors" younger than 12 or 13 years old.

"Just remember, the best way to prevent influenza is to get a vaccine".

Stacey Anderson of the DPHHS Communicable Disease Epidemiology section agrees.

Most flu shots cover four flu viruses - two influenza A viruses (H3N2 and H1N1) - and two B viruses.

Health experts say people can still protect themselves by getting flu shots, usually available at little or no cost at primary care practices, local drugstores or workplaces.
