Liverpool have been heavily linked with the German worldwide but the Schalke midfielder made a decision to sign for Bayern Munich.

"Emre Can is a player whose contract is running down, so it allows us to approach him for negotiations and that is the course we have taken", Marotta told Sky Sport Italia, as quoted by Sky Sports.

Spanish outlet as confirmed that Liverpool had been pipped to his signature ahead of his summer move.

"All of the club, including (club president Clemens) Tonnies, is fighting to keep him here".

Now, according to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool have admitted defeat in their quest to bring Goretzka to England. Yesterday, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has informed us that Leon has passed the medical check.

Cape Town - Juventus are ready to do everything they can to sign Liverpool's Emre Can to a pre-contract agreement this month.

Cancer blood test finds eight kinds of tumours
The test they developed - dubbed CancerSEEK - examines the levels of 8 proteins and the presence of mutations in 16 genes. This is the Holy Grail - a blood test to diagnose cancer without all the other procedures like scans or colonoscopy".

"This means Leon Goretzka will remain in the Bundesliga".

Liverpool will have to look elsewhere to strengthen their midfield after Bayern Munich nabbed one of their top January transfer targets.

Schalke star Goretzka is at the centre of a transfer tussle, with Bayern Munich and Manchester United also interested.

While Barcelona are another high-profile club that has shown interest in Goretzka, it sure sounds as though he'll be calling Allianz Arena home before too long. Leipzig were reportedly asking for too much, though, so that possibility is off the table now as well.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will stand pat with the squad they have, or if Klopp and the board have any other tricks up their sleeve.
