The 77-year-old has been resting at home since pulling out of a dinner that the Football Writers Association (FWA) had arranged in his honour, his representative Jose Fornos Rodrigues said.

The three-time World Cup victor, 77, was scheduled to attend the Football Writers Association (FWA) Tribute Night in London on Sunday where he was due to be honored. The Football Writers Association has reported that Pele "has undergone a series of tests which appear to point to severe exhaustion".

Pele - the only player to win three World Cups - withdrew and the FWA said he was being monitored by doctors. "Thankfully, there is no suggestion of anything more serious than exhaustion".

FWA executive secretary Paul McCarthy said in a statement that exhaustion was determined to be the cause. "With that in mind, we want to do Pele proud and make Sunday night as memorable as possible". President Vladimir Putin and Diego Maradona took photographs with the legend on wheelchair.

Considered as the greatest player of all time, Pele was voted as World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) in the year 1999.

It is also on record that he scored 77 goals and made 91 appearances for Brazil.
