A ceremony was held Monday to mark the beginning of the two-year $270 million renovation of the famous Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Among the changes are a new press box and new concourses.
The Coliseum last underwent significant renovations over two decades ago in order to fix damage caused by the 1994 Northridge quake.
The Coliseum will officially change its name in 2019 after the renovations are complete.
The renovations, scheduled to be completed in 2019, will include additional aisles, handrails, better Wi-Fi, concession expansions and upgraded audio and video systems, according to a USC release.
"With this news, I am pleased to share that the home of Trojan football-and a treasure for the city of Los Angeles, our state, and even our nation-will be renamed the United Airlines Memorial Coliseum". "It's needed, it's needed badly, and we are doing it now", USC president C.L. Max Nikias told The Wall Street Journal.
"As part of our stewardship agreement for the Coliseum, USC committed to finding a sponsor whose support would help us preserve this legendary landmark", Nikias said in an email to Trojans supporters.

"The restoration of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is a vital step forward to a more dynamic 9th District", Los Angeles City Councilman and Coliseum Commission President Curren Price said. "I want to thank USC for the major investment in our community, which will have a lasting, positive impact in the lives of current and future generations". It hosted two previous Olympic Games, in 1932 and 1984, two Super Bowls and a World Series. It has been the home of the USC Trojans since it opened in 1923.
"It nearly feels like a no-brainer to continue to make sure that it remains a symbol". A new Scholarship Club Tower will feature suites and club seats.
Since opening nearly 95 years ago, the Coliseum has welcomed over 118 million visitors at more than 4,500 events.
The university will invest $70 million in the stadium upgrades.
