Giannis dunks over Knicks, who lose Porzingis to torn ACL

Report | Matthew Dellavedova to miss 3-4 weeks

Matthew Dellavedova Could Be Out For Nearly A Month With A Sprained Ankle

The New York Knicks and the National Basketball Association suffered a massive loss on Tuesday night, when star big man Kristaps Porzingis went down with a torn ACL.

When the Knicks visited Milwaukee last Friday, it took a Giannis Antetokounmpo layup with two seconds remaining to seal a win, while a year ago, Antetokounmpo famously hit a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer to seal a memorable Bucks win. Porzingis landed awkwardly, causing his left knee to buckle.

He previously missed two games due to a left knee issue and two games due to an ankle injury.

New York, which entered the game a season-worst eight games under.500 after losing three straight, was leading 31-30 at the time of injury. The under is also 11-4 in Milwaukee's last 15 games coming off a win of more than 10 points.

As for the Knicks the rest of this season, they were already clearly sellers in the trade market.

How big a blow did Kristaps Porzingis' future take when he suffered a torn ACL on Tuesday? After KP's lightning fast start and first All-Star selection, it looked like the Knicks had their centerpiece. DeMarcus Cousins is out for the season with a ruptured achilles, and a knee procedure has sidelined Washington Wizards star John Wall for the next two months.

Dellavedova has appeared in 37 games and is averaging 4.4 points and 3.8 assists while shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc. I didn't see Tim Hardaway under me.

Alas, Porzingis' injury will make it hard and probably impossible for him to make an All-NBA team (or win Defensive Player of the Year) next season and qualify to start his extension at 30 percent of the salary cap rather than the usual 25 percent for players with his experience.

The Knicks said Porzingis was undergoing further evaluation and would not return to the game. This year's crop of talent is considered to be one of the best in years.
