On November 19 previous year, two adult elephants were killed after being hit by speeding train near Thakurkuchi railway station located close to Guwahati.

Five elephants were killed after being hit by a train while crossing rail tracks in Assam's Hojai district, a forest official said on Sunday.

Another elephant was seriously injured in the accident, he added.

The engine of the train derailed due to the impact at 9.40 p.m.

If locals claims are taken in account, the accident spot was an identified elephant corridor.

Although initially driven by prescription drugs, most opioid deaths now involve illicit drugs, including heroin and fentanyl. Most of those lawsuits have been consolidated in U.S.

The accident took place around 9:30 pm near Habaipur railway station, almost 180 km east of the state capital.

The elephants were part of a larger herd migrating through the hilly forest state, where train tracks cut across elephant corridors that act as transit routes for the wandering animals. They alleged that they tried to signal the loco pilot to slow down due to the movement of elephants. "While prima facie inquiry has revealed that the train was within its stipulated speed, a departmental enquiry has been ordered to find out details about adherence to protocols", the NFR CPRO said.

Seventy elephants had lost their lives past year due to electrocution, speeding trains, poisoning, human attacks, and other accidents besides natural death, a forest department official said. The section was restored after the engine was put back on track nearly five hours later.

It may be mentioned here that there has been a manifold increase in the incidents of elephant crossings during the recent past and trains are constantly slowed down whenever any information of herd movement is shared with the railway by the forest department.

At least a dozen pachyderms lost lives in train accident in the state last year, while sixteen were killed by speeding trains in the year before.
