Trump defended Porter in the Oval Office on Friday and wished him well while making no mention of the alleged victims. Corbett had reportedly first made her accusations against Sorensen to the October 2017, while Sorensen was unergoing a background check. Andrew Puzder, Trump's initial pick for labor secretary, backed down from the job after his former wife accused him of domestic violence. He said she hit him several times, causing bruises and scrapes.

The willingness of women in recent months to go public with their stories of harassment and abuse has exposed a blind spot toward those issues at a variety of institutions - Hollywood, the media, Congress...and now, it seems, the White House too. "And we hope he has a wonderful career", Mr Trump said.

And on Friday, a second member of Trump's team - speechwriter David Sorenson - had to resign as well after domestic abuse allegations surfaced against him.

The president's loyalty to Moore, Sorensen and Porter - all of whom deny the allegations against them and have not been charged - may run counter to fast-moving social changes in the United States and beyond, but he is not the only figure to have expressed qualms about the role of due process when women make rape or domestic violence allegations.

White House officials told the Post they learned of Corbett's accusations only last night.

White House spokesman Raj Shah said in statement that the administration "confronted" Sorensen on the matter, after which Sorensen denied the allegations and resigned.

Speier said it would be Vice President Pence's responsibility to respond to the situation.

Chief of staff John Kelly is under fire for his handling of Porter's departure.

Both men deny the allegations.

But a White House official said Friday that Kelly has not offered his resignation.

Kelly later said in a statement he was shocked by "new" allegations against Porter, stressing that domestic violence is unacceptable.

"If he (Trump) draws scrutiny to himself, he's OK with that".

Two White House aides made abrupt exits this week amid allegations of spousal abuse, CBS News' Laura Podesta reported.

Shah also conceded the crisis could have been better handled by senior White House officials. He said strongly yesterday that he is innocent, but you will have to talk to him about that'.

Over the past two years, Trump has also been accused by more than a dozen women of making unwanted sexual advances against them. Porter and Kelly later discussed the allegations. Reuters has not independently confirmed the allegations against Porter, or against Trump. Porter's application for a security clearance had been held up because of them.

Porter's first wife, Colbie Holderness, released a picture of her eye in 2005 after Porter allegedly punched her.

"As you know, he says he's innocent".
