Hour laters, White House speechwriter David Sorensen also resigned over domestic abuse allegations.

Trump himself has had to deny accusations from more than a dozen women that he has sexually abused them or behaved inappropriately.

Last Friday, Kelly made it clear that he would resign if the President wanted him to, a source with knowledge of the matter told CNN.

Since early last week, the accusations that Porter battered two ex-wives has rocked the White House, with media outlets revealing that he may have had access to the same classified information as the president and did not have security clearance.

Questions are also being raised against chief of staff John Kelly, who reportedly knew about the allegations against Porter back in November.

Conway said she and the White House were caught by surprise by the revelations against Porter.

"Well, General Kelly tells me otherwise", Conway said.

"In talking with the President, I think he's saddened about what happened with Rob", Short told NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

As noted by The Hill, former White House staff secretary Rob Porter resigned on Wednesday, February 7 after two of his ex-wives claimed that he had allegedly inflicted physical and emotional abuse on them during their marriages.

Mr Porter worked directly with Mr Kelly, the chief of staff, and was considered a skilled insider.

Critics have denounced his remarks about Porter, saying they illustrate why abused women are afraid to come forward.

"He says he's innocent, and I think you have to remember that", said Trump. "Some are true and some are false", he wrote.

But she also said people should be given the benefit of the doubt - she said Trump and chief of staff John Kelly initially found the allegations hard to believe, just as she'd find it hard to believe such an allegation about Tapper. "We are a safer, more prosperous nation - that includes all of us, including the nation's women - because of Donald Trump's leadership".

Willoughby said that society as a whole doesnt' recognize the reality of abuse and that denying it was easier than accepting the devastation that is the truth. Reuters has not independently confirmed the allegations against Porter, or against Trump.

While reports say that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was told of allegations against Porter previous year - and that Kelly had long known of them - Conway said Trump found out only along with other Americans.

A women's group has called for Kelly to resign from his position as chief of staff, however, there are now no signs that President Trump is leaning that way.

"There is no recovery for someone falsely accused - life and career are gone", he continued.
