On the downside, his ERA has gone up each of the past 3 seasons; he's never reached 190 innings; his walk rate climbed each of the past 3 seasons, and was a very high 10.1% last year; he keeps allowing home runs year after year; his ERA consistently tops what his Fielding-Independent Pitching numers would predict for his earned-run average.

The Twins were in need of a rotation upgrade after Ervin Santana underwent surgery on his finger, which is expected to put him on the DL to start the season. He has a 3.83 ERA for his career.

Palacios was considered part of the Twins depth at the shortstop position.

Odorizzi, 27, was traded to the Rays in 2012 and leaves the team with 124 starts (fifth), 698 innings (sixth), 40 wins (tied for sixth) and 639 strikeouts (fifth).

But he's hit.290 in the minors after being signed in 2014 and hit.296 between Class A Cedar Rapids and Fort Myers last season. At that price, he's much more affordable for the small-market Twins then spending what it would take to sign one of the top free agent starters available, most notably Jake Arrieta, Lance Lynn, or Alex Cobb. In exchange for Odorizzi, who won his arbitration hearing this week and will make $6.3 million this season, the Twins gave up only Class A shortstop Jermaine Palacios. The Twins also offered a deal for Rays ace Chris Archer, with Max Kepler part of the package.

Odorizzi had been the talk of many trade discussions this offseason as the Rays have two more years of control with him, but didn't believe they were going to be able to resign him.

He joins a rotation with Jose Berrios and Kyle Gibson, and whenever Santana is healthy. Sanchez now goes in the mix for a spot in the back end of the rotation, with Phil Hughes, Adalberto Mejia and others for that role.
