Study Says Alcohol More Important Than Exercise For Living Into Your 90s

'Modest' alcohol consumption could help you live longer

She also advised getting outside of the house and talking to strangers, rather than sitting doing crosswords or Sudoku.

(Previous studies have connected heavy drinking to high blood pressure and cancer.) Premature death is usually defined as death that occurs before a person reaches an expected age (average life expectancy in the United States is 78, for example).

As part of the survey, researchers perform neurological, neuropsychological and cognitive tests on the participants every six months at the Clinic for Aging Research and Education in Laguna Woods, Calif.

The recipe for a long life includes exercising for 15 minutes a day, spending two hours on hobbies and enjoying a couple of glasses of wine, according to an ageing expert.

"I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity", said Kawas over the weekend at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual conference in Austin, Texas.

She also said that Jahan had no role in her conversion and that he came into her life only after she embraced Islam. She also requested the apex court to order appropriate compensation for all that she has been forced to suffer.

Dr Kawas found that people who had roughly two glasses of beer or wine per day had an 18% reduced risk of premature death.

Another curious discovery was that people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than normal or underweight people. Both are more common in women than men.

While the UCI researchers found a link between these daily habits and a long life, it doesn't necessarily mean that the lifestyle choices caused the participants to live to 90. Among those with dementia, half do not have sufficient neuropathology in their brain to explain their cognitive loss. Dietary information, physical activities, medical history and medication were also factored into each study. The best mortality experience is to gain between five and 10 pounds per decade.

"Underweight people had a 50 per increase in mortality".

"The sad thing is, we've added more years than we've added quality", Kawas said at the conference.
