European Union trade chief Cecilia Malmstrom said there was no "immediate clarity on the exact U.S. procedure for exemption" following a trilateral meeting on Saturday with her American counterpart and Japan's trade minister.

In Brussels on Saturday, US trade representative Robert Lighthizer met with his European Union and Japanese counterparts, but the meeting offered little new clarity amid fears of a global trade war.

The Australian government's urgency rose after the USA president announced that he meant to enact the tariffs as a remedy to trade imbalances.

Trump highlighted close ties with Australia when pressed on the possibility of further exemptions.

"Steel is steel", Trump said before signing off on the tariffs.

Shortly after Trump's tweet, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Twitter that the relationship between the two allies was fair and reciprocal. "It is a great country, a long-term partner, we will doing something with them".

"We can welcome this cautiously, but I emphasize caution", Turnbull said. Trump said Thursday that countries with a "security relationship" with the United States could ask to be excluded.

On Thursday, Trump had said that America will remain open to modifying or removing the tariffs for individual nations.

"In addition, there will be a mechanism for USA parties to apply for the exclusion of specific products based on demand that is unmet by domestic production or on specific national security considerations".
