ACF Fiorentina honoured their late captain Davide Astori during the 1-0 win over Benevento in the 28th round of the Serie A football championship on Sunday, the side's first match since the 31-year-old's death.

Astori died suddenly last week after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest at the team's hotel ahead of their Serie A match against Udinese, which was subsequently postponed.

The ball was then kicked out of play in the 13th minute, with fans singing and applauding.

During the warm-up, Fiorentina players wore shirts with his name and number printed on the back.

His one and only fight to date ended in disaster that night, as he was steamrolled by the younger, more talented Mickey Gall . Punk, who lives in his native Chicago, immediately said he meant to fight again but has been relatively quiet since.

Fans in the stands held messages and banners and chanted "one captain, there's only one captain!".

The entire day was dedicated to Astori's memory, with all the mascots wearing the defender's now-retired No.13 shirt - half in Fiorentina jerseys, half in Cagliari colours...

Brazilian Hugo celebrated the 25th-minute goal, his first for Fiorentina, by holding up a t-shirt bearing an image of fellow defender Astori before standing in front of it and saluting.

Both teams hit the post in the final minutes, through Massimo Coda and new Fiorentina captain Milan Badelj.
