The departure of top economic adviser Gary Cohn, a "globalist" free trader who fought a losing battle against tariffs, is a stark sign that President Trump intends to pursue aggressive trade policies despite opposition from allies across the globe and within the White House itself.

Worries about a potential trade war after Cohn said he was resigning on Tuesday initially sent the S&P 500 down almost 1 percent but the three major USA stock indexes closed higher on Thursday after Trump appeared to soften his stance on tariffs.

Cohn-Navarro discussions sometimes turned into shouting matches, occasionally in front of Trump.

Director of the National Economic Council Gary Cohn at the White House in Washington, September 26, 2017. "He is a rare talent, and I thank him for his dedicated service to the American people", Trump said.

Nope. Chinese metal imports to the United States are already heavily restricted.

On Liddell's appointment to the administration, Trump said in a statement that Liddell's skills were "exactly what is needed to effect substantial change, including system wide improvement to the performance of the government".

Other countries have threatened reprisals, prompting fears of a global trade war.

"He's been terrific", Trump said of Cohn, who is Jewish. "Don't forget that Goldman never wanted to do business with Donald Trump", Cohan said.

Technical problem leads to long delays for Air Canada flights
The carrier said it was "experiencing some flight delays, but we're getting everyone on their way". Air Canada first acknowledged the issues in a tweet at 11:14 a.m.

Trump said in a tweet on Tuesday night that he "will be making a decision soon" on replacing Cohn, the latest in a string of high-level departures from the White House.

The president and the combative Navarro share the same hard-line views on trade that were a centerpiece of Trump's campaign.

They helped develop the tariff plan Trump sprung on the economic world last week, to the surprise and consternation of Cohn and others.

The official said the tariffs would impact the renegotiation of the bilateral free trade deal with the United States that is now underway. "In his own way, he's a nationalist because he loves his country". The European Union and other allies are targeting items that include orange juice from Florida, motorcycles from Wisconsin, and tobacco from North Carolina, all of which are politically important states.

When Trump announced Thursday that he was slapping tariffs of 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on aluminum, he temporarily exempted big steel producers Canada and Mexico - provided they agree to renegotiate a North American trade deal to his satisfaction.

Trump told confidants recently that he wants to be less reliant on his staff, believing they often give bad advice, and that he plans to follow his own instincts, which he credits with his stunning election, according to two people who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to speak about private conversations.

With no name from Wall Street floating among the likely contenders, a more protectionist slant in the White House is predicted in Cohn's wake. "There's no question. You know what?"
