Trump has complained about the Democratic political affiliation of McCabe's wife, and criticized his oversight of FBI investigations into Hillary Clinton.

McCabe declined to comment through a spokesperson.

In a statement, Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores in a statement said the following: "The Department follows a prescribed process by which an employee may be terminated".

The embattled official abruptly stepped down at the end of January and has been on leave since that time. As a result, the report launched an Federal Bureau of Investigation disciplinary process that recommended Mr. McCabe's firing, the newspaper said.

That report, which has been complete for over a week, according to the source, has not been released publicly.

If Sessions fires McCabe, who has spent over 20 years at the bureau, he might lose his pension.

"The situation now seems fraught for all involved", the Post reported. If the Justice Department does not move on the recommendation, conservatives might view officials there as unfairly protecting McCabe.

"FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is racing the clock to retire with full benefits", Trump tweeted in December.

McCabe's tenure became entangled in politically charged controversies, including the investigation into Clinton's private email and the continuing criminal probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election. McCabe represents but a piece of that work.

Horowitz's investigation is looking at a variety of allegations, including whether it was improper for former FBI Director James Comey to make a public announcement about not recommending prosecution over the email arrangement - he also faulted Clinton and her associates for being "extremely careless" with classified information. McCabe briefly took over as the FBI's acting director after Trump fired Comey in May.

Over the a year ago, Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz has been conducting a review of the FBI and DOJ's actions related to the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.
