The bye-elections have changed India's political landscape for over four decades now.

In the party mouthpiece Saamna, Sena said the margin of BJP defeats in Gorakhpur and Phulpur proves the disillusionment of people towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, "who has failed to keep the promises made in 2014".

During the event deputy chief minister, Keshav Prasad Maurya said that the party accepts its defeat in Gorakhpur and Phulpur bypolls with grace and that it will leave no stone unturned to win in general election in 2019. The saffron-clad Yogi Adityanath, who has never lost the Gorakhpur seat since 1991, became the state Chief Minister.

The results have laid a road ahead for the anti-BJP forces. It could also put a fresh question mark over its unquestioned frontrunner status for the next Lok Sabha polls, spoiling the party over the recent saffron successes in the north-east.

Samajwadi Party candidate Praveen Nishad defeated Bharatiya Janata Party's nominee Upendra Singh by over 21,000 votes, wresting the Gorakhpur parliamentary seat, which it had held for almost 30 years, with Adityanath winning five consecutive times till 2014. The NDA had won 73 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

RJD retained the Araria Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar, defeating the BJP candidate in a first trial of strength after Nitish Kumar ditched the RJD and the Congress and forged hands with the BJP to retain his Govt. past year. Besides, in Maharashtra, its MP from Bhandara-Gondiya Nana Patole-defected and joined the Congress.

BJP leaders said they were caught off-guard by the alliance of the two regional parties, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier this week, Sonia Gandhi hosted a dinner party for about 20 of the opposition party leaders to forge a grouping. "It was for friendship and better dialogue between parties", Congress party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala pointed out.

Yogi Adityanath and BJP came to power in the state in 2017 on the back of a resounding win which saw SP and BSP confined to the sidelines.
