Volkswagen will reportedly pull the covers off of a midsize pickup truck based on it Atlas crossover SUV in NY this week, according to inside sources speaking with Automotive News Europe.

Said to be a spin-off of the Atlas three-row crossover, the pickup concept will apparently be used to gauge customer response, with series production apparently a very real possibility - and soon.

A smaller Tiguan concept announced last week will make it way over to the US before 2020 from the brand's production plant in China.

No other details were divulged about the possible midsize pickup, which VW will aim at rivals such as the Honda Ridgeline, Chevrolet Colorado, and upcoming Ford Ranger.

Expectations from meeting in Varna — Turkey-EU
Tusk thanked Turkey for its stance on migration and support for refugees, calling it "impressive". Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov hosted the summit as chairman of the EU Council.

In the USA last year, light trucks accounted for just almost 23 percent of the VW brand's sales, compared with 64 percent for the overall light-vehicle market, according to the Automotive News Data Center.

Volkswagen isn't the only one hopping into the pickup foray, with Hyundai confirming past year that it's building a midsize, light duty truck by 2020. Sources told the news site that the yet unnamed pickup could be assembled at the company's Chattanooga, Tennessee plant as well.

If Volkswagen's New York Auto Show concept is any indication, the German brand's future US plans might involve a trip off the beaten path. Stay tuned for more news coming out of NY this week.

A two-row version of the Atlas will be revealed at the New York Auto Show. "The Atlas. and its coming five-seat derivative can get that since both can be sold in China [as the Teramont], but a pickup like this would likely just be for the USA and Canadian market".
