Foreign Ministry Protests Dublin Mayor's Anti-Israel Visit

Authorities there say Mícheál Mac Donncha was attending a conference in Palestine that glorified a war criminal.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas speaks at a Conference in Ramallah. However, the mayor entered Israel on Tuesday night on the way to a conference in the West Bank's city of Ramallah. Israel had aimed to block his entry because of his support for the BDS movement that advocates boycotts against it.

Israel's foreign ministry has summoned the Republic's ambassador to express dismay over Dublin's Sinn Fein mayor attending an "anti-Israel" event in Ramallah.

The Israeli government refuses to recognize Palestine as an independent political and diplomatic entity and continues to build settlements in occupied areas, despite objections from the United Nations.

The Israeli government said it expects "an official public response" from the Irish Government with regard to "the conduct of the both the Dublin City Council and of the Lord Mayor".

Interior Minister Arieh Deri, who ordered an inquiry after Mr Mac Donncha's arrival, said that upon his departure, he would be notified he will not be allowed back.

Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz reported that the ban order sent to airport immigration officials misspelled Mac Donncha's name.

The council also called for the expulsion of Israel's ambassador over the killing of Palestinians at recent protests on the Gaza-Israel border.
