Whale Rider director Niki Caro will helm the film, which will re-adapt Disney's 1998 animated musical.

Now, Deadline reports that "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" actor Donnie Yeun (Chirrut Îmwe) will be joining the cast as Commander Tung, Mulan's mentor and teacher.

Speaking of changes, there is one major change to the entire film - the villain. The live-action remake of Mulan is the latest effort from Disney to recycle their animated tales in a new light.

For the role of the Emperor of China, who orders the troop conscription that ultimately leads to Mulan posing as a boy to take the place of her father in the army, the production has its eyes on another Chinese superstar: Jet Li.

The live-action Mulan was originally set to open in 2018, but the release date was pushed to 2020.
