Abbott received a border security briefing in Weslaco around 3:15 p.m. then spoke to the media around 4:45 p.m.
Earlier this week, the governor said he will send 300 troops per week until the total reaches at least 1,000.
Calling border security a "top priority" in which Texas "has stepped up to answer the call", Abbott said, "The addition of National Guard troops to aid Customs and Border Patrol will serve to strengthen border security, and their presence will make a meaningful difference".
Even Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown of California, whose state has drawn the ire of President Trump given its sanctuary policies, is cooperating - although he was much more explicit about what he wants the National Guard's role to be. There are only 4 miles of paved road along the Laredo segment of the border.
The order sent states along the southern border scrambling to decide if and how many troops they would send to meet Trump's request. On Friday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Public Affairs distributed a video of the 20-mile construction project, referring to it as the "Santa Teresa Border Wall Replacement Project" in southern New Mexico. ABC-7 previously reported on the 200% increased reported by CBP. "Our goal is to prosecute every case that is brought to us".
The governor cited the same statistic during his visit, saying that the increase was concerning and the main reason for the deployment of troops - not the caravan making its way to the U.S.
