California Deploys National Guard; Troops Already At Texas, Arizona Borders

Texas governor promotes Trump National Guard plan but what can troops

Gov. Greg Abbott discusses deploying troops to Texas-Mexico border from southern Texas

Abbott received a border security briefing in Weslaco around 3:15 p.m. then spoke to the media around 4:45 p.m.

Trump's decision last week came as he expressed concern on Twitter over the caravan of several hundred Central American immigrants in Mexico heading towards the US border.

Earlier this week, the governor said he will send 300 troops per week until the total reaches at least 1,000.

Calling border security a "top priority" in which Texas "has stepped up to answer the call", Abbott said, "The addition of National Guard troops to aid Customs and Border Patrol will serve to strengthen border security, and their presence will make a meaningful difference".

Even Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown of California, whose state has drawn the ire of President Trump given its sanctuary policies, is cooperating - although he was much more explicit about what he wants the National Guard's role to be. There are only 4 miles of paved road along the Laredo segment of the border.

The order sent states along the southern border scrambling to decide if and how many troops they would send to meet Trump's request. On Friday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Public Affairs distributed a video of the 20-mile construction project, referring to it as the "Santa Teresa Border Wall Replacement Project" in southern New Mexico. ABC-7 previously reported on the 200% increased reported by CBP. "Our goal is to prosecute every case that is brought to us".

The governor cited the same statistic during his visit, saying that the increase was concerning and the main reason for the deployment of troops - not the caravan making its way to the U.S.

Sessions said the lack of a barrier on the border opens the country to illegal immigration.

Brown cast his decision as a welcome infusion of federal support to fight transnational criminal gangs and drug and firearms smugglers. "This will not be a mission to build a new wall".

States will manage the National Guard troops they deploy, though deployment is being funded by the federal government.

With national guard soldiers in uniform standing at attention to his left and right, Ducey said the operation would not militarize the border and said he wanted to see the operation for himself.

Each of the four states that border Mexico have agreed to send National Guard troops to patrol the region.
