More than a week after frustrated teachers walked out of class in Oklahoma, lawmakers and the state's education association have reached a deal.

The signatures of thousands of parents and teachers who are calling for better funding for public schools will be presented to the nation's education ministers as they meet in Adelaide.

The OEA walkout lasted 9 days officially, but those who were at the Capitol on Friday make it 10 days.

The threat of a walkout motivated lawmakers to approve more than $400 million in new education spending, most of it going to teacher pay, which ranks near the bottom nationally.

Prior to the walkout, the Legislature passed and Gov. Mary Fallin signed a massive tax hike package to pay for teacher pay raises averaging $6,100 and to put additional dollars in the classroom.

More than a dozen teachers filed paperwork this week to run for state House and Senate seats, many of them first-time candidates inspired by the teacher walkout that has shuttered schools across the state for a second consecutive week.

The Oklahoma City-American Federation of Teachers, which like the OEA opposed the strike from the beginning, acknowledged Friday that a poll it had conducted showed overwhelming support for the continuation of the strike.

Teachers did not win the repeal of the capital gains tax exemption that they pushed for this week, which would reportedly would bring in $120 million annually.

If you're a high school student, having a substitute teacher for the day typically means you'll be watching a boring video for the length of the class or doing some other kind of meaningless busywork, but students of substitute math teacher named Ryan Fish were treated to something entirely different. If they are not, he said schools should send delegates.
