Those strikes destroyed an airstrip, aircraft and fuel stations, and were retaliation for another chemical gas attack at Khan Sheikhoun, that killed around 90 people, an attack the United Nations later officially blamed on Syrian forces.

Syrian TV is reporting that the attack on Syria targeted a scientific research center in Barzeh, near Damascus.

While there had been general public warnings broadcast by U.S. President Donald Trump, Macron himself and other Western leaders, a French presidency source clarified that the French leader did not tell Russian President Vladimir Putin the allies would strike overnight when they talked over the phone on Friday. "Today's action by the U.S., the United Kingdom, and France is a proper response to the repeated use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime".

British Prime Minister Theresa May said the attack "sends a clear message that the worldwide community will not stand by and tolerate the use of chemical weapons".

The US launched airstrikes on Syria over Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons in Damascus.

On Monday, Russia warned that any military intervention from the US against Russian allies in Syria would result in the "most serious consequences" and called news of last weekend's chemical attacks "fabricated".

"Again, we are being threatened", Russia's ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, said in a statement.

"The objective of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons", Trump said.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members Germany and the Netherlands have said they will not take part in any military action. "They are crimes of a monster instead".

The Syrian government has denied it used any chemical weapons in an attack, while Russia's Foreign Ministry claims there is no evidence of a chemical attack in Douma.
