The Bar Association Kathua (BAK) has withdrawn its offer to contest without charge the case of the eight people accused in the rape and murder case of an eight-year-old Muslim girl in the district. "It was sheer indiscretion on their part [to attend the rally]", he said.
Both Ganga and Singh had participated in the rally on March 1 after the Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police had arrested the nephew of a caretaker of a "devisathan" (temple) in connection with the kidnapping and rape of the little girl.
Confirming the reports of their resignation, BJP's state chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi said, "It is a simple resignation letter, but they have done it to save party from the adverse publicity going on in the media about their publicly supporting the Hindu Ekta Manch who have been demanding shifting of investigations into the girl's rape and murder case from state's Crime Branch to CBI". He also informed that the chief-minister had accepted the duo's resignation from the State Cabinet.
'The return of one family is not Rohingya repatriation'
Reuters reported that Myanmar has denied almost all allegations, saying it waged a legitimate counter-insurgency operation. Tens of thousands of Rohingya fled Myanmar by sea following an outbreak of sectarian violence in Rakhine in 2012.
Ganga and Singh submitted their resignations to the BJP's state president on Friday "to save the image of the prime minister and the party" following a controversy over their presence in a rally in support of the accused.
The senior BJP leader admitted that the two ministers displayed lack of discretion by taking part in the rally, but made it clear that there was no attempt to sabotage the investigations as charged by the Congress party.
People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the BJP are the parties which jointly rule the trouble-torn State of Jammu & Kashmir. "It has strengthened my belief that Jammu serves as a model of inclusiveness and together the people of J-K inspire secular unity and righteousness", she said and added that this serves as a cue that the people of Jammu and Kashmir can hold a beacon of hope for the whole country amid harshly polarized discourse. "To safeguard the interest of Jammu, I will not hesitate to fight the government or meet the prime minister personally and reiterate the demand for a CBI probe into the Kathua rape-and-murder case which is the demand of lakhs of people", Ganga told reporters in Jammu on Saturday evening. Her body was found dumped in a forest near Rasana village seven days later. They tried to give communal colour to a heinous crime.
